Innovation
Products developed from the application outward.
IGNIS develops products by first understanding where and how they will be used. The chemistry follows the problem, not the other way round.
Development process
Six stages, from question to market.
Step 1: Understand the application
Materials, environment, motion, load and use. What the product touches, what it must resist and how it will be applied.
Step 2: Define the requirement
Performance, compatibility, usability and commercial considerations, written down before development begins, so every later decision can be checked against them.
Step 3: Develop
Formulation, material selection, product specification and packaging. The container and the method of application are treated as part of the product.
Step 4: Validate
Application testing and iterative refinement, in conditions that resemble real use as closely as practical.
Step 5: Manufacture
The finished product, made to the specification defined at the start.
Step 6: Commercialise
Brand, communication, distribution and market development, informed by what was learned in development.
Where surfaces meet
Most of the products IGNIS develops act at an interface: between a ball and its race, a chain and its sprocket, a polishing compound and glass. Understanding the load, speed, temperature and materials at that interface is where development begins.
Technical fields
The disciplines we draw on
- Tribology
- Friction, wear and lubrication between surfaces in relative motion. The discipline beneath most of what the group makes.
- Chemistry and formulation
- Base fluids, thickeners, additives and solvents, combined for a defined purpose.
- Viscosity and rheology
- How a product flows, stays in place and behaves across temperature and shear.
- Materials compatibility
- The effect of a product on plastics, elastomers, coatings and metals it will meet in service.
- Polymers and mechanical interfaces
- Plastic gears, seals, bearings and printed parts, where conventional products can cause damage.
- Thermal management
- Heat transfer and stability where temperature governs performance.
- Cleaning, polishing and surface interaction
- Removing contamination and refining surfaces without harming the substrate.
- Packaging and application systems
- Dosing, dispensing and access, so that the right amount reaches the right place.
Formulations and specifications developed by IGNIS are confidential to the group and its brands.
